A Life That Changed Everything

Marjoe Gortner, the former child preacher who later became a Hollywood actor, has died at 82. His remarkable life began when he was only four years old, when his parents placed him on the revival circuit and presented him as a gifted young preacher. Years later, Gortner revealed that much of what audiences saw had been carefully coached, exposing a childhood shaped by the expectations and pressures of public performance.

In 1971, Gortner invited filmmakers to document what he said would be his final preaching tour. The resulting documentary, Marjoe, showed audiences the fundraising techniques and behind-the-scenes practices surrounding revival preaching. The film became a major moment in his story and went on to win the Academy Award for Best Documentary Feature, turning the former child preacher into a powerful voice about an experience he had once lived from inside.

Gortner later built a diverse acting career, appearing in films such as Earthquake and Starcrash, as well as the television series Falcon Crest. He also became involved in producing celebrity events connected to charitable causes. His life continued to move between entertainment, public causes, and the difficult story of his early years. Those who knew him remembered his energy and his ability to bring people together.

According to reports citing his family, Gortner died October 2 in Santa Fe, New Mexico, from complications related to congestive heart failure. He married Susan Magestro in 2019. His story remains unusual and deeply human: a child once placed in front of crowds to perform a role eventually grew into an adult who chose to reveal what was happening behind the curtain—and then build a life on his own terms.
