At eighty years old, I believed life had already given me its greatest surprises. I had raised three children, welcomed seven grandchildren, and spent fifty wonderful years married to Robert, the man I thought I knew better than anyone. Even twelve years after his death, I still sometimes reached for a second coffee cup in the morning, forgetting that his place at the kitchen table was empty. His favorite armchair remained beside the living room window, and his photograph stood proudly on the mantel. My life was peaceful, filled with gardening, church friends, and Sunday visits from my youngest son, Daniel. Then my body began changing in ways I couldn’t explain. My skirts became tighter around the waist, and within a few months, my abdomen had grown noticeably larger. Sometimes I experienced uncomfortable pressure after meals, and strange sensations occasionally disturbed my sleep. I told myself that bodies changed with age, but my daughter-in-law, Sarah, grew concerned when she noticed the swelling. She gently insisted that I see a doctor, and eventually I agreed. At the hospital, Dr. Helen Parker examined me and ordered several tests. An ultrasound revealed a large fluid-filled mass in my abdomen, and further investigation was necessary to determine its nature. I was frightened, but I tried to remain calm. Then Dr. Parker asked a question that caught me completely off guard. “Mrs. Whitmore, have you ever received treatment through a private research facility?” I shook my head. As she opened an archived medical record, I noticed a familiar name: Carter Biomedical. Suddenly, I remembered a woman who had visited Robert during his final hospitalization. Her name was Dr. Evelyn Carter, and my husband had spoken with her privately before telling me that everything was fine.
That evening, I remembered something I hadn’t thought about in years. Shortly before Robert died, he had given me a sealed envelope with my name written across the front. “Keep this somewhere safe, Margaret,” he’d told me. “If something happens that you don’t understand, you may find the answers here.” For twelve years, I had never opened it. I assumed it contained financial documents or instructions about our household affairs. But now, sitting alone in my bedroom, I took the worn envelope from my bedside drawer and held it in my trembling hands. Before I could open it, Daniel called to check on me. I told him about the hospital’s discovery and mentioned Dr. Carter. His voice changed immediately. After a long pause, he admitted that Robert had kept another safe in the basement, hidden behind old storage cabinets. Daniel had discovered it after his father’s death, but he had assumed the documents inside were ordinary business records. Then he remembered a folder bearing my name. When he finally brought the papers to the hospital, I saw two words printed across the first page: PROJECT MARGARET. Beneath the heading was a date from twelve years earlier, the same period when Robert had become seriously ill. I stared at the document, wondering why my name appeared in a medical research file I had never heard about. And when Daniel turned to the next page, we discovered something that made us question everything we thought we knew about my husband’s final years…CONTINUE READING
