The Wife at the Aircraft Door

I had spent nine years learning how to smile even when my heart was hurting. As a flight attendant, I knew how to welcome strangers with warmth, keep my voice calm, and never let personal emotions interfere with my work. My husband, Ryan, knew that about me too. Perhaps that was why he had become so comfortable underestimating me. He was forty-four, successful, confident, and always convinced he could talk his way out of anything. That morning, he told me he was traveling to Austin for business. He kissed my cheek, adjusted his expensive watch, and walked out of our house without a second thought. What he didn’t know was that my schedule had changed, and I had been assigned to a flight from Dallas to Cancun. Hours later, I stood at the aircraft door in my uniform, greeting passengers one by one. Then I saw him. Ryan was walking toward me with a younger woman holding his arm. He had promised her that our divorce was nearly finished, that I knew about her, and that their trip to Cancun was the beginning of their new life together. She stared at me with tears gathering in her eyes. “You’re his wife?” she asked. I quietly nodded. “I didn’t know anything until today.” The aircraft door eventually closed, trapping all three of us inside the same uncomfortable reality. Ryan spent the flight sending me messages, begging me not to make a scene. I refused to give him one. I simply continued doing my job. But halfway through the flight, Ashley approached me and whispered something that changed the entire situation. She said Ryan hadn’t only lied about our marriage. She had discovered documents on his tablet that suggested he had been hiding something much bigger. And when she showed me what she had found, I realized the affair might be the smallest part of the betrayal. … CONTINUE READING
