My name is Teresa Akers. I’m a retired postmaster, and after thirty-one years of making numbers match, I know when something doesn’t add up. That morning, sitting in my car outside the tax preparer’s office, I found a form showing that Bobby Whitt had paid my father, Clayton Akers, $26,000 in rent the previous year. At the north pasture fence, he asked Bobby where he sent the rent. Bobby answered without hesitation that he had been paying Sherry, just as she had instructed him. Then Daddy revealed that I had been covering the very bills she claimed his rent was paying. Bobby’s face went pale, and Daddy quietly told him to send the next payment directly to him. But as we drove back toward town, Daddy remained silent, turning something over in his mind. Finally, he broke that silence with a request that would change our family forever…CONTINUE READING
