My Ex-Husband Tried to Steal $1.2 Million

Moments after my divorce was finalized, I received an alert that my former husband, Landon, was attempting to charge a $640,000 necklace to my company credit card. I immediately called my father, Martin Bell, who reminded me that Landon had never owned a single share of my business. For twelve years, I had allowed him access to my finances because I believed marriage meant trust. Now, with our relationship officially over, he was still behaving as though my company belonged to him. When I declined the transaction, Landon called furiously from an exclusive Manhattan club, accusing me of humiliating him in front of his new girlfriend, Tessa. I calmly informed him that his access had been revoked and that he needed to return all company property by the following morning. He insisted the necklace was merely a gift he intended to purchase and claimed I was acting out of spite. I ended the call before he could manipulate me into another argument. But minutes later, my accounting system flagged something far more alarming: a request for $1.2 million payable to an unfamiliar company called Northbridge Advisory. The payment carried my electronic signature, even though I had never authorized it. When I showed my father the request, his expression changed. He immediately contacted a forensic accountant and asked whether Landon had ever accessed my computer or electronic signature. Suddenly, I remembered finding him at my desk six months earlier, surrounded by financial folders. He had claimed he was searching for an old anniversary photograph, and I had actually apologized for questioning him. That memory now made my stomach turn. My father warned me not to confront Landon until we understood what was happening. I agreed, unaware that the attempted payment was only one piece of a much larger scheme.

The following morning, I arrived at my Manhattan office before sunrise. My assistant, Olivia, told me that a man named Richard Cole had recently submitted an invoice and consulting agreement bearing my electronic signature. The document claimed I had authorized professional services on a weekend when I had been attending a financing conference in Chicago. My father arrived with Daniel Ross, the forensic accountant, who began securing our financial records and examining the company’s authorization logs. Within hours, Daniel discovered suspicious transfers totaling approximately $286,000 over eighteen months. The money had gone to obscure administrative and marketing agencies that had never provided legitimate services to my company. One of those businesses belonged to Richard Cole, the same man Landon had introduced to me at an anniversary party two years earlier. Then my corporate attorney delivered another shock: Landon had hired a lawyer and was demanding $2.5 million, claiming he deserved compensation for helping build my business. His attorney threatened a lawsuit and promised to produce documents supporting the demand. That evening, I searched my archived emails and found a message Landon had sent more than a year earlier. He had complained about living in my shadow and mentioned needing access to financial records to organize our shared assets. Reading those words, I realized he might have been preparing for our separation long before I knew it was coming. But just as I believed I finally understood his plan, Daniel called with an unexpected discovery about the company receiving the money—and its connection to someone I had trusted for years…CONTINUE READING
