PART 2 : My Ex-Husband Tried to Steal $1.2 Million

Daniel’s investigation uncovered a network of businesses linked through shared addresses, contact information, and financial transactions. Richard Cole had not been operating independently; several of the companies receiving suspicious payments appeared connected to people within Landon’s professional circle. The $286,000 in transfers, the fraudulent consulting agreements, and the attempted $1.2 million payment were now part of a coordinated investigation. My attorneys immediately notified the bank, preserved the original electronic records, and challenged Landon’s demand for compensation. I also instructed our security team to revoke every remaining credential he might have accessed, including old company accounts and archived financial systems. When Landon called again, his anger had disappeared. He sounded almost affectionate, asking whether we could settle everything privately and avoid dragging our families through an ugly legal dispute. I recognized the tactic immediately. For years, he had used charm whenever intimidation stopped working. This time, I refused to negotiate without my attorney. Tessa soon sent me a message claiming Landon had told her the company was practically his and that I was withholding money he had earned. I replied with one sentence: “Ask him to show you the signed employment contract, shareholder agreement, or authorization proving that claim.” She never answered. As investigators continued reviewing the evidence, I learned that the most damaging documents were not the invoices themselves but the electronic access records showing when my signature had been used and which accounts had initiated the transactions. For the first time, I understood that trusting someone did not mean surrendering responsibility for protecting what I had built.

In the weeks that followed, I focused on securing the business my father and I had spent years building. Our legal team worked with financial investigators to trace the suspicious payments, challenge the unauthorized transactions, and determine what could be recovered. Landon’s civil demands became increasingly difficult to support as we requested documentation for every alleged contribution he claimed to have made. I stopped answering his personal calls and communicated through counsel instead. It was painful to accept that the man I had once planned to grow old with might have been using our marriage to gain access to my financial life. Yet I refused to let that realization define the rest of my future. I had built my company through years of difficult decisions, long nights, and sacrifices that Landon had never fully understood. I would not allow shame or fear to keep me from protecting it. One evening, my father sat beside me in my office and asked whether I regretted trusting Landon. I thought about the twelve years we had shared, the memories I could not erase, and the warning signs I had explained away because I wanted our marriage to work. “I regret ignoring my instincts,” I told him. “But I won’t regret believing that people can be trusted. I’ll simply be more careful about who gets access to my life.” For the first time since the divorce, I felt that my future belonged entirely to me. Landon had expected me to panic, surrender, and pay him to disappear. Instead, he had forced me to see exactly what needed protecting—and reminded me that the strongest response to betrayal was not revenge, but evidence, boundaries, and the courage to move forward.
