Demond Wilson, best known for playing Lamont Sanford on the classic sitcom Sanford and Son, has died at 79. His passing closes a remarkable chapter in television history. For millions of viewers, Wilson was the calm, practical presence who balanced Redd Foxx’s unforgettable comedy. But his career reached far beyond one beloved role, spanning television, film, theater, writing, and ministry.
Born Grady Demond Wilson on October 13, 1946, Wilson grew up in New York City after being born in Valdosta, Georgia. His passion for performing began when he was young. He appeared on Broadway as a child and later performed at Harlem’s historic Apollo Theater. Those early experiences helped prepare him for the entertainment career that would eventually make him a familiar face to audiences across America.
His breakthrough came in 1972 when he was cast as Lamont Sanford in Sanford and Son. The sitcom centered on the hilarious and sometimes touching relationship between Lamont and his father, Fred Sanford, played by Redd Foxx. Wilson’s understated delivery created the perfect contrast to Foxx’s energetic performance, helping make the series one of the defining comedies of its generation. Although Lamont became his signature character, Wilson continued acting after the show ended, appearing in projects including Baby… I’m Back! and The New Odd Couple.
Later, Wilson chose a different path. He became an ordained minister, devoted time to writing and family, and stepped away from Hollywood for a period. He and his wife, Cicely, raised six children. Wilson eventually returned to acting occasionally while continuing his work as an author and minister. He died on January 30, 2026, at his home in the Palm Springs area of California, following complications related to cancer. His legacy extends far beyond Lamont Sanford—a talented performer who became an author, minister, husband, father, and enduring part of television history.READ MORE BELOW…
