The Homeplace She Refused to Lose

“Your father-in-law’s been telling people you’d sell the family farm by Christmas.”
Amy Brandt heard those words from an elderly patient sitting in her dental chair. For a moment, she couldn’t move. After nine years of treating Merle Hansen, she knew he wasn’t the kind of man who repeated gossip without a reason. But what he told her next hurt more than she could have imagined. Her father-in-law, Walt, had been telling people at the local farmers’ co-op that he would never sell the family homeplace to his own son because Amy was a town girl who would turn the land into housing lots.

She reminded him that whatever happened to the land, those memories could never be sold. That night, Amy told Luke she had made a decision. She would save every dollar she could, and one day, she would buy the homeplace back—not to punish his father, but to give their children a chance to know where their family came from. What Amy didn’t know was that four years of sacrifice would lead her to a cold March morning, where one final bid would put everything they loved at risk..CONTINUE READING
