The cake was paid for, the order was confirmed, and my daughter Emma had given me one simple instruction: “Just give them your name. Everything’s paid for.” But when I arrived at the bakery the day before her wedding, the woman behind the counter checked her computer and suddenly looked uncomfortable. “I’m sorry, ma’am. I can’t release the cake to Laura.” I laughed, thinking there had been a mistake. “I’m the bride’s mother.” She turned her screen toward herself and repeated, “The bride specifically requested that we not release it to you.” My smile disappeared. I immediately called Emma, who sounded just as confused as I was. After verifying her identity, the baker finally released the cake, but before I left, she mentioned something that made my stomach tighten. A woman had called the previous day pretending to be Emma, and the baker recognized her as someone who had visited with a man a few weeks earlier. When she described him as tall, gray at the temples, wearing a navy jacket, with a small scar near his eyebrow, my blood ran cold. It was my husband, David. That evening, I confronted him in our kitchen. When I showed him the phone number connected to the mysterious call, he immediately became defensive. “Laura, tomorrow is our daughter’s wedding. Please don’t do this tonight.” His reaction told me more than his words ever could. The following morning, I pulled Emma aside while she was getting ready. “Your father knows the woman who called the bakery,” I whispered. “I think he’s having an affair.” Emma’s face changed immediately. “Dad isn’t having an affair, Mom.” Her certainty confused me even more. Before I could question her, David appeared, looking frightened. Then a venue employee interrupted us with an unexpected announcement: a woman downstairs was asking about the wedding cake, and she had introduced herself as Laura. David went pale. “She’s here?” he whispered before rushing downstairs. I followed him, determined not to be shut out again. Near the entrance stood a woman around my age, clutching her purse. When David told her to leave, she laughed bitterly and asked whether he was still protecting her. I demanded to know how long they had been seeing each other. She stared at me in disbelief. “You think I’m his mistress?” Before anyone could explain, Emma’s fiancé, Ryan, appeared on the staircase. The woman’s expression softened when she saw him. “Ryan,” she whispered. He stiffened and looked at David. “You know her?” Then he turned toward me and said something that made the entire situation even more confusing: “My dad knows her too.” I looked between them, desperate for an explanation. Finally, the woman faced me and revealed the truth I had never imagined..CONTINUE READING
