What the Phone Didn’t Say

The young woman said it calmly, sitting in Dr. Vanessa Hale’s examination room with one hand resting on her pregnant belly. Vanessa, a forty-four-year-old obstetrician who had spent seventeen years bringing babies into the world, felt her entire life shift in a single moment. The woman, Tessa Morrow, was twenty-six years old, approximately thirty-one weeks pregnant, and determined to destroy Vanessa’s marriage. But Vanessa had spent twelve years loving Roy, a brilliant surgeon who still made her coffee every morning and kissed her forehead every night. They had survived long hospital shifts, years of infertility, and three heartbreaking rounds of IVF. Their last embryo had failed just six months earlier. Vanessa had thought they were finally learning how to live with that loss. Now, standing in front of a woman claiming to carry her husband’s child, she wondered whether everything she believed about her marriage had been a lie.

Tessa had blamed Roy for her mother’s death and threatened to destroy everything he loved. One message revealed that she had deliberately planned to make Vanessa believe the baby was Roy’s. But as Vanessa read further, her anger gave way to a different kind of fear: Tessa was pregnant, dangerously ill, and completely alone. Before sunrise, Vanessa found an emergency contact on Tessa’s medical form and made a phone call that would change three lives forever..CONTINUE READING
