They Ruined My Garage to Steal My Win

Three mornings in a row, I woke up to find my freshly painted white garage door covered in black paint. My husband, Toby, thought it was a cruel prank, but I knew someone was trying to ruin my chances in Maple Grove’s annual neighborhood beautification competition. I had spent months tending my roses, trimming hedges, and perfecting every corner of our yard. Winning meant more than the $1,000 garden center gift certificate. It represented all the love and hard work I had poured into our home. Our neighbor Kelsie, who had finished second for two years straight, seemed especially sympathetic. She even brought us water while we repainted the garage. But after the second attack, I discovered a paint-covered white shirt hidden in our hedge. After the third, I found a muddy work boot near the flower bed. Something was wrong, and I decided to install security cameras without telling anyone. At 2:30 a.m., my phone alerted me to movement. I opened the footage and watched a hooded figure carefully covering our garage in black paint. Then the person turned toward the camera and lowered the hood. I recognized the familiar green jacket immediately. It was Kelsie.

Unfortunately, the footage was blurry, and I knew she could deny everything. So I started investigating. At the local hardware store, the owner remembered selling black exterior paint to our neighbor John, who had claimed he slept through the vandalism. He also remembered Joyce, the woman who managed our neighborhood Facebook group, shopping for paint samples with someone. Then I discovered our supposedly broken doorbell camera had secretly recorded everything for months. The footage revealed three different visitors on three separate nights. One lost a boot while running through my flower bed. Another left a paint-covered shirt in my hedge. The third wore Kelsie’s unmistakable jacket. My neighbors had been taking turns destroying my property while pretending to feel sorry for me. When I showed Toby the recordings, he wanted to confront them immediately. Instead, I decided to do something they would never expect. I invited all three neighbors to a little gathering on the morning of the competition and promised them a chance to celebrate our neighborhood together. They happily accepted, believing I had finally given up. What they didn’t know was that I had a projector, three recordings, and one very public surprise waiting for them…CONTINUE READING
