I arrived at my son Ethan’s engagement party wearing inexpensive clothes and carrying a reusable grocery bag. I wanted to discover whether the woman he planned to marry truly loved him or simply wanted his money. Within minutes, his beautiful fiancée, Vanessa, turned a garden hose on me, soaking my faded blouse while her wealthy guests laughed.
