The Rent My Father Saved for Me

For five years, my father charged me $250 a month to live under his roof. I thought he was heartless, especially when he knew how hard I was struggling. I worked long shifts, counted every dollar, and watched my dream of becoming a musician slowly fade. After his funeral, his best friend handed me a mysterious box and said, “Your father wanted you to have this when he was gone.” What I discovered inside changed everything I believed about the man I thought I knew.

Before my mother died, our home was filled with music. Dad played guitar while Mom sang from the kitchen, and I dreamed of becoming a musician just like him. But after losing her, Dad became distant, buried himself in work, and insisted that music was a waste of time. When I turned eighteen, he began collecting rent, leaving me to believe that my own father cared more about money than my future. We barely spoke for years, and when cancer finally took him, I was left with regret, anger, and questions I could no longer ask. Then I opened the box his best friend had delivered. Inside were old photographs, concert passes, and a key bearing an unfamiliar address. I followed it to a hidden recording studio filled with professional equipment, old band pictures, and the guitar I thought I had lost years earlier. On a desk, I found a flash drive labeled “Our Band.” When I pressed play, my father appeared on the screen, looking weak and exhausted.
