Twelve years after losing my mother, my father was finally ready to open his heart again. I was old enough to remember the man he used to be before grief changed everything. He once filled our home with music, laughter, and terrible jokes at the dinner table. But after Mom passed away, the house grew quiet, and so did he. For years, he refused to consider dating anyone new. Whenever relatives suggested that he deserved another chance at happiness, he would simply smile and say, “I am not alone. I have you.” Those words always touched me, but deep down, I hoped he would eventually discover that life could still hold beautiful surprises.
Then, one Saturday afternoon, I noticed him smiling at his phone. He had created a dating profile, and for the first time in years, there was a little spark of excitement in his eyes. I hugged him and told him that Mom would have wanted him to find happiness again. Soon, he began meeting women who seemed to enjoy his company. One worked at a library, another owned a small bakery, and another volunteered with animals. My father returned from each date looking hopeful, sometimes talking about the possibility of seeing someone again. But the following morning, something strange would happen. Every woman suddenly stopped responding. At first, I assumed it was ordinary dating disappointment, but after six women disappeared, my father began wondering whether something was wrong with him. Watching his confidence fade broke my heart. I knew he deserved better, so I asked my best friend, Rachel, to go on a date with him. She agreed, and their evening went wonderfully. Yet the next morning, Rachel stopped answering my calls. When she finally agreed to meet me, she looked frightened and showed me a message that made my stomach turn. Someone had sent her a photograph of herself leaving the restaurant with my father, along with a chilling warning to stay away from him.
