Erica stopped cutting the pie. She recognized me immediately. “That’s her,” she said. She then revealed something my family had never known: months earlier, her younger brother had survived an overseas evacuation because an Army major had stayed behind, coordinated the rescue, and helped get eleven people to safety. She had never known that officer was me.
Jason tried to dismiss the rescue as luck, but Erica looked at him in disbelief. Then my father received a call from Sergeant Alvarez. I was safe, she explained, though I had suffered a burn on my hand during the rescue. Then she told him something that left the entire room silent: I had still listed him as my emergency contact.
Despite everything, I had never removed his name.
At that moment, a general appeared on a live press conference and explained that my presence on the highway had never been scheduled. I had volunteered for Christmas duty after canceling my personal leave.
Jason went completely still.
Erica slowly turned toward my father and asked the question nobody wanted to answer: “Why did she cancel her leave?”
No one spoke.
But everyone at that Christmas table already knew.
