Nearly forty minutes later, Chloe came back through the front door. She was holding Richard’s leather bag. Mom immediately stood up. “Where did you get that?” she asked. Chloe placed it carefully on the table and opened it. Inside were several photographs, a small music box, and picture cards designed to help someone who struggled with memory. Then Chloe pulled out a handwritten note. It said, “My name is Evelyn. Richard is my son.” Everyone became silent. The mystery suddenly seemed much more complicated than we had imagined.
We eventually learned the truth. Evelyn was Richard’s 86-year-old mother, who was living in a memory-care facility and suffering from dementia. Richard had been leaving our Sunday dinners early because he visited her every evening. As the night progressed, Evelyn often became frightened and confused. Sometimes she forgot who Richard was, and he stayed with her until she felt safe again. He had kept her condition private because a previous relationship had ended when his partner couldn’t accept the responsibility involved in caring for an aging parent. Richard hadn’t been hiding another woman or another family. He had been protecting someone who depended on him.
When Mom confronted Richard, he apologized for not trusting her enough to tell her the truth. Mom simply reached for his hand and said, “You don’t have to choose between caring for your mother and loving me.” After that, everything changed. Richard continued visiting Evelyn, but he no longer felt he had to hide that part of his life. Sometimes he brought her to Sunday dinner, and our family helped make her comfortable. Mom still wore her red dress, Richard still brought flowers, and eventually he stopped watching the clock every few minutes. The secret we had feared turned out to be something completely different: not betrayal, but love, responsibility, and a son doing everything he could for his mother.
