PART2 My Husband Took My SUV for a Fishing Weekend While Our Toddler Burned With a 103° Fever. His Text Back Changed Everything

That message changed something in her. Instead of arguing with him again, she found the spare toddler car seat in the garage and ordered a rideshare. The driver waited while she installed the seat, and she took Silas to the emergency room wearing slippers because she had been in such a hurry. At the hospital, Silas was examined, given fluids, and diagnosed with symptoms consistent with a viral infection. The doctor gave her instructions for medication, hydration, and warning signs to watch for.

While Silas slept in her arms after the visit, she finally checked her phone. Trent had not sent a single message asking how his son was doing. When she opened their shared email to find a pharmacy receipt, she saw that Trent’s car had already been repaired and was ready for pickup. Her first instinct was to organize everything for him, including arranging for someone to watch Silas so she could collect Trent’s car.

Then she stopped herself. She realized she was once again solving a problem that wasn’t hers while holding the sick child Trent had told her to “figure out.” She closed the email and sent him only one message saying that Silas had been seen, was home, and that his car was ready at the repair shop.

Trent replied casually, asking, “Good. So we’re good?” She looked at Silas sleeping on the couch, his hair still damp from the fever, and answered with only two words: “Silas is.” She then put the phone down instead of continuing the conversation.

That weekend became important not because of a dramatic argument, but because of what she finally understood. When she and her sick child truly needed Trent, he chose his weekend over them and expected her to solve everything alone. For the first time, instead of fixing his problems too, she focused only on herself and Silas.
