Eventually, Andrew decided to handle it differently. He showed Kayla several rooms for rent and told her she had passed his test—the test of whether she was ready to live with roommates. It wasn’t about punishing her. It was about reminding her that staying with us was temporary and that our boundaries mattered.
Later, Kayla finally admitted the truth behind her strange behavior. Her boyfriend hadn’t cheated or betrayed her. He had simply ended their six-year relationship because he no longer wanted the life they had built. She had been desperately searching for a reason, and she wanted Andrew to prove that all men were unreliable.
That conversation changed everything.
Kayla apologized for treating my boundary like something she had the right to debate. We agreed on a plan for her future, while Andrew admitted he should have supported me sooner instead of staying completely out of the conflict.
The next morning, Kayla came downstairs wearing the ugliest robe in the house. She asked before using Andrew’s expensive coffee, then reached for the filters herself.
When Andrew tried to help, she pointed at him and said, “Sit.”
Then she climbed onto a chair, grabbed the filters, and smiled.
“See? Back on my feet.”
And for the first time in weeks, all three of us laughed.
