We packed as quickly as we could and left, driving for hours before stopping at a brightly lit, 24-hour diner. Still shaken, I posted a warning on the booking platform so other guests could be careful. The host responded almost immediately, but instead of offering an explanation or apology, he accused us of interfering with a “private security transmitter.” Then came a message that made our fear even worse: “They’ll come looking for it.” We had no idea what it meant, but it was enough to make us question whether someone knew where we were.
I looked back through the photographs I had taken earlier. In one image, I noticed what appeared to be a faint red dot near the living-room window. It could have been something completely harmless, but after discovering the camera, we no longer felt comfortable taking chances. We changed our plans, abandoned our original route, and checked into a hotel in another part of the city. The following morning, we contacted police and provided the camera, photographs, and the threatening message for investigators to examine.
The experience left us with a lesson we never expected to learn from a vacation. A beautiful property, positive reviews, and a verified host badge can create a strong sense of trust, but privacy still deserves attention. If something in a rental seems unusual, it is worth documenting it and seeking help rather than confronting anyone directly. Sometimes a tiny blinking light may be nothing at all—but when something feels wrong, paying attention can make all the difference.
