Inside was a handwritten note from a child: “Please don’t quit. We love you so much. We are so sorry.” Mark looked at Jane, expecting an explanation, and instead saw tears in her eyes. She finally told him that she had resigned from her job as a fifth-grade teacher after months of exhaustion and stress. She had been struggling quietly, trying to protect everyone around her while feeling more and more overwhelmed.

But her students had noticed. The children in her classroom had learned that their beloved teacher might be leaving, so they pooled their allowance money, lunch money, and spare change to buy her flowers. One child even asked a grandmother for money from her change jar. Another student, Lily, who struggled with writing, carefully wrote the note that had stopped Mark in his tracks. The flowers were not from a secret admirer. They were from children who simply wanted their teacher to know how much she mattered.

That summer gave Jane time to rest, reconnect with herself, and rediscover something she had nearly forgotten: her love of writing. Eventually, she decided to return to her classroom with healthier boundaries and a clearer sense of what she needed. When she came back, Lily proudly showed her the notebook she had filled with writing over the summer. Later, she gave Jane a simple drawing with four carefully written words: “You came back. Good.” Sometimes, the smallest words can remind us exactly why we matter to someone.
