Then one Saturday, his diner boss called me and told me to come immediately. When I arrived, I found Evan sitting in the back room, crying, with an elderly woman named Delia beside him and a stack of money on the table. That was when I discovered the truth. For six months, Evan had been using his earnings to buy groceries and help pay for Delia’s medication. He had met her at the diner and learned that sometimes she had to choose between buying food and paying for her prescriptions. So my thirteen-year-old son had quietly decided to help her.

The bicycle had never really been the point. Evan told me he had been afraid to ask me for anything because he knew how hard I worked and believed we could not afford much extra. He thought being strong meant needing nothing. And suddenly I understood that I had made the same mistake. I had hidden my grief because I thought I needed to protect him, while he had hidden his burdens because he thought he needed to protect me. We had both been carrying the same sadness alone.

That night, we finally talked about Danny. We talked about grief, money, fear, and all the things we had been too careful to say. I told Evan he didn’t need to be the man of the house. He needed to be thirteen. He needed to be my son. And I needed to be his mother, not someone he was afraid to burden. We couldn’t change the years we’d spent carrying everything separately. But we could change what came next. From that day forward, we promised each other one simple thing: we would keep showing up — together.
