What began as a peaceful outdoor lesson in Iowa turned into an emergency that left an entire school community grieving. On September 22, 2026, a fifth-grade class from Borlaug Elementary School in Coralville was exploring the Macbride Nature Recreation Area as part of the University of Iowa’s School of the Wild program. Fourteen children had been hiking through the wooded landscape before stopping for lunch near the Coralville Reservoir. Their teacher, 24-year-old Hannah Jorgensen, was supervising the outing when something unexpected happened near the water. Within moments, the ordinary afternoon became a desperate rescue situation. For weeks afterward, families and community members wondered exactly what had happened beside the spillway.

On October 23, the Johnson County Sheriff’s Office released additional findings that helped explain the emergency. Investigators had interviewed the surviving students and a bystander who witnessed the incident. The report described how 10-year-old Ahmed Osman stepped into flowing water near the spillway, slipped on the rocks, and fell into the reservoir. His teacher immediately entered the water in an effort to reach him. Another adult nearby also attempted to help. But investigators revealed one additional detail about the teacher’s actions that made the account especially moving: even while trying to rescue her student, she was still giving instructions to the children waiting on shore.

According to authorities, Hannah had left her cellphone on land before entering the reservoir. Once in the water, she instructed her students to call 911. One child used her phone to contact emergency services, while others alerted a nearby bystander. The adult entered the water in another rescue attempt but eventually returned safely and remained with the children until responders arrived. Emergency crews received the initial report at approximately 12:10 p.m. Hannah was recovered that afternoon, while the search for Ahmed continued into the following day. Authorities confirmed that both had lost their lives. The tragedy prompted serious questions about outdoor education safety, emergency preparedness, supervision, and the risks associated with moving water. Such incidents can also raise questions for school administrators, insurance providers, and attorneys about safety procedures, although officials have not announced any court findings or legal responsibility in this case. The University of Iowa subsequently placed the School of the Wild program on hiatus, while counselors and support staff were made available to the grieving school community.

Behind the investigation were two families facing an unimaginable loss. Ahmed, whose family had immigrated from Sudan, loved soccer and mathematics and dreamed of becoming either a physician or a professional athlete. His father, Mohamed Osman, remembered a boy who enjoyed helping his community and had a promising future ahead. Hannah’s former colleagues described her as a patient, thoughtful educator who consistently put her students first. Her family remembered her kindness, quiet personality, and enthusiasm for life. The newly released findings added a powerful detail to those memories: while struggling in the reservoir, Hannah was still thinking about the safety of the other children. The sheriff’s office confirmed that she directed them to seek emergency assistance, and they followed her instructions. Their actions, the bystander’s efforts, and the work of responding crews became part of a painful story that continues to affect Iowa families. At its heart are the lives of a beloved teacher and a young student who will be remembered for far more than the circumstances of that September afternoon.
