Benny explained that he’d stayed because he remembered a conversation we’d shared at the grocery store. I’d confessed how frightened I was about Logan, how I couldn’t tell whether he was grieving or drifting away from me. Benny admitted that he’d once judged Logan unfairly, too, assuming he’d been involved in vandalism simply because of his reputation. Now he wanted me to understand the truth. Logan had done something extraordinary, but the biggest surprise came later, when we sat together on the back porch. I asked how he’d known what to do during Walter’s emergency. After a long silence, he admitted he’d secretly been attending CPR classes at the YMCA every Tuesday evening. He’d started going because he couldn’t stop thinking about his father’s death. If someone on that road had known what to do, perhaps things might have been different. He couldn’t change what had happened to Daniel, but he wanted to be prepared if someone else ever needed help. Those evenings I’d spent worrying about where he was had actually been spent learning how to save a life. When I asked why he’d never told me, he looked down and said, “Because I thought you’d cry. And you already cry enough.” I covered my mouth, realizing how much pain he’d been hiding behind his silence. For the first time in a long time, we talked honestly about our grief, our fears, and how neither of us had to carry everything alone.

The next day, I took my boys to visit Walter in the hospital. He was sitting up in bed, wearing his reading glasses and working on a crossword puzzle. When Logan approached, Walter took his hand and said, “They tell me you broke two of my ribs. That’s the nicest thing anybody’s done for me in fifteen years.” Logan laughed, embarrassed but relieved. Then Andrew offered Walter a slightly squashed butterscotch candy, explaining, “For you. For your heart.” I had to turn toward the window to hide my tears. Later, on the drive home, Logan asked whether his father would have been proud of him. I pulled the car over and told him Daniel would have told everyone in town what he’d done. He would have been bursting with pride. In the weeks that followed, people began seeing Logan differently, but I realized the person who most needed to see him clearly was me. I’d spent two years watching for the boy I feared he might become instead of appreciating the young man he already was. That evening, I heard him humming his father’s favorite song while washing the dishes. For the first time in a long time, our house felt a little less heavy with grief. That night, when Logan couldn’t sleep, he knocked on my bedroom door instead of walking out into the darkness. He sat beside me, humming softly, until he fell asleep against my shoulder. I held him there and finally understood: I wasn’t the only one holding our family together. We were holding each other.
