My phone buzzed at 11:42 a.m. while I was working at the hospital. I almost ignored it, but something told me to answer. An officer introduced himself as Benny Reyes and said, “Your children are safe, Rachel. But I need you to come home. Your older son was involved in a situation.” My heart dropped. I was a nurse with nineteen years of experience, but when it came to my own children, all my training disappeared. I rushed home, imagining the worst. My seventeen-year-old son, Logan, had already been questioned by the police before. Once for a reckless bike race, another time for skipping school to support his best friend at a soccer tournament. After his father died two years earlier, Logan had grown quiet and withdrawn, and I worried constantly about the young man he was becoming. Logan explained that he’d taken Andrew for a walk that morning when they heard a thud outside an elderly neighbor’s house. Seventy-eight-year-old Walter Henson was lying unconscious on his porch. Logan told his little brother to hold onto a fence, then ran to help. He called emergency services and followed the dispatcher’s instructions, performing chest compressions for nearly six minutes until Benny arrived. The paramedics eventually restored Walter’s heartbeat. I stared at my son, unable to reconcile the boy I’d been so worried about with the brave young man standing before me. Then Logan whispered, “I just didn’t want him to be alone, Mom.” Suddenly, I understood. His father had died alone in his truck on the side of a road, and Logan had never forgotten it. But what I learned next revealed just how deeply my son had been carrying that loss…CONTINUE READING

My phone buzzed at 11:42 a.m. while I was working at the hospital.
