Skyla once left a note on my refrigerator reminding me that coffee wasn’t breakfast. After she disappeared for five days, that little note was all I had left of my broke girlfriend. I was twenty-six, wealthy, and running a successful business, while Skyla was twenty-four, struggling through college and working evening shifts at a restaurant. She drove an unreliable car, repaired things instead of replacing them, and refused every offer I made to pay her tuition. “I need to know I can do this myself,” she always said. My parents and friends warned me that she might be waiting for the perfect opportunity to benefit from my money. At first, I defended her, but eventually their suspicions poisoned my thoughts. I began questioning every thoughtful gesture, wondering whether her kindness was genuine or simply a way to keep me happy.

Instead of trusting the woman who had stood beside me for nearly two years, I decided to test her loyalty. One evening, I told Skyla that doctors had discovered a serious illness and that I needed an enormous amount of money for treatment. It was all a lie. I wanted to see whether she would stay when she believed I had become a burden. Rather than asking about my wealth, she immediately began researching treatment centers, financial assistance, insurance appeals, and second opinions. She filled a notebook with questions and spent hours trying to find solutions. Instead of telling the truth, I continued the deception. The next morning, she sent a message that made my stomach drop: “I’m leaving for five days. Don’t call me.” She ignored my calls, and I convinced myself that my parents had been right about her all along. But on the third day, I noticed the little refrigerator note she had left weeks earlier: EAT BREAKFAST BEFORE YOUR MEETING. COFFEE IS NOT BREAKFAST. Beneath it was a badly drawn egg. I suddenly remembered all the small things she had done for me without asking for anything in return. By the fifth evening, I was no longer angry. I was ashamed. Then the front door opened, and Skyla walked in carrying her grandmother’s old wooden recipe box. She looked exhausted, placed it on the coffee table, and said, “I couldn’t find the money, Archie. But I found something else.” When she opened the box, I saw what she had spent those five days doing—and I covered my face and cried..CONTINUE READING PART 2

Skyla once left a note on my refrigerator reminding me that coffee wasn’t breakfast.
