Inside the box was a faded photograph of Edwin holding a newborn baby. On the back, his familiar handwriting read, “E.J. — 3 weeks — Long’s Park — April 2002.” Beneath it lay old letters from a young woman named Tammy, who had once been involved with Glenn before his marriage. She had written that she had kept her baby despite Glenn’s desperate attempt to make the pregnancy disappear. The child was named Ethan James. Edwin had secretly welcomed his grandson into the family, visiting him every month, buying groceries, helping with rent, and teaching him to grow tomatoes. Photographs showed them together at parks, baseball games, and beside tiny tomato plants behind an apartment building. Ethan had been ten when Edwin died, and without his grandfather’s support, his life slowly unraveled. His mother eventually died, and Ethan spent years moving between foster care and homelessness. Glenn had discovered the box fourteen years earlier. He had known about his son but, frightened of losing his comfortable life, had put the letters away and remained silent. Now, sitting before Ethan, he finally understood what his silence had cost. He apologized through tears, admitting that he had failed the son he had never even tried to find. Ethan listened quietly before telling him that he had never wanted money or a house. He had only wanted to know who his father was.

Ethan initially refused to move into Iris’s house, believing he had not earned it. But Susan, Iris’s daughter, eventually persuaded him by reminding him that her mother had wanted him to plant tomatoes in the garden. He moved in and began rebuilding his life. Glenn started visiting every Thursday, just as Ethan had once visited Iris. They worked together in the garage, built shelves, and slowly learned how to share the silence between them. Ethan eventually accepted an apprenticeship at Glenn’s construction company, though he still called his father by his first name. In spring, he planted twelve Better Boy tomato plants, just as Edwin had taught him. When the first tomato ripened, Ethan carried it into the kitchen and shared it with Susan and Glenn. Later, the three of them visited Iris’s grave with twelve yellow roses each. Ethan read the final chapter of Little Women, the book Iris had loved, and laughed through his tears when Glenn remembered how Edwin used to pretend not to cry at sad stories. Looking at the flowers, Ethan asked Susan whether Iris had known who he was when she offered to marry him. Susan believed she had. Iris had wanted to discover whether Ethan would choose a roof over his dignity, and he had chosen love instead. She had given him both anyway. Today, Edwin’s wooden box rests on the mantel, no longer locked away. Its little brass key hangs in the garage beside the level on the first hook. And every spring, tomatoes grow again in the garden of a house where a homeless young man finally found what he had been searching for all along: not just a home, but a family.
