After working on my father’s Nebraska farm for 22 years, I watched my older brother, Phil, inherit all 400 acres. He received the farmhouse, the machinery, the irrigation equipment, and the fields where I had spent most of my adult life working. I received one rusty 1994 feed truck. Phil had spent thirty years selling insurance in Omaha, while I had planted the crops, repaired tractors, cared for cattle, and worked beside Dad through every season. My wife, Theresa, begged me to challenge the will, but I refused. “Dad signed it,” I told her. “He’s gone now, and I won’t take him to court when he can’t explain himself.” I drove the old truck home, found a job hauling fertilizer, and tried to accept my new reality. Every morning, I climbed into that truck and saw Dad’s worn leather gloves resting on the dashboard. His old cap lay on the passenger seat, and the cab still smelled of diesel and peppermint candies. I missed him more than I could explain, but beneath the grief was a question I couldn’t silence: How could a father leave the land to one son and almost nothing to the other? Phil insisted he hadn’t asked for the inheritance, and I believed him. Still, neither of us knew how to talk about what had happened.

Pride kept us apart, and the farm began to suffer. Phil hired an outside crew to plant the corn, but they worked the fields when the soil was too wet. The rows emerged unevenly, weeds spread, and the irrigation system stopped working. I watched helplessly as the land I knew so well began to struggle. Part of me wanted to help, but another part was still hurt that my own brother hadn’t asked. Four months passed before Phil finally came to my house. Standing beside Dad’s old truck, he removed his cap and admitted he didn’t know how to save the farm. I agreed to inspect the fields, but before leaving, I remembered something important: Dad’s green notebook, filled with years of irrigation repairs and planting records, was missing. I climbed into the truck and reached beneath the passenger seat, where Dad used to hide things he didn’t want to lose. I found the notebook inside an old bank deposit bag. But tucked beside it was a sealed envelope with my name written in Dad’s familiar handwriting. It had never been mailed. The letter was dated just four days before he signed his will, and as I opened it, I realized my father had left me something far more complicated than an old truck..CONTINUE READING

After working on my father’s Nebraska farm for 22 years, I watched my older brother, Phil, inherit all 400 acres.
