I hit the sidewalk on my hands and knees, my palms bleeding and my jacket torn. Behind me, the glass door of my own restaurant slammed shut. “And stay out,” my manager, Kyle, said with a laugh. I was fifty-two years old, and I had just been thrown out of the business I had spent eleven years building. But Kyle didn’t know who I really was. I had disguised myself in an old jacket, worn-out boots, and a gray knit cap to find out why longtime customers were disappearing. My restaurant, Rosie’s, had been built around a promise I made to my mother before she died: nobody leaves hungry. She had spent thirty-eight years feeding people who couldn’t afford a proper meal, often paying for their food out of her own tips. I named my restaurant after her and kept a jar behind the register to cover meals for anyone in need. But after I hired Kyle to manage the place, complaints started arriving. Then Kyle stormed out of the kitchen, humiliated me in front of the customers, and grabbed my arm. As he shoved me toward the door, I stumbled past the hostess stand and saw Madison, the receptionist, secretly swiping an elderly woman’s credit card through a small black device hidden beneath the counter. Kyle glanced at her hand, and something in his expression changed. Suddenly, I understood that the problem at Rosie’s was far worse than bad service. As I lay bleeding on the sidewalk, I realized my manager had just made the biggest mistake of his life...CONTINUE READING

I hit the sidewalk on my hands and knees, my palms bleeding and my jacket torn.
