Mrs. Hartmann, an eighty-six-year-old former teacher, stood in her doorway wearing two cardigans. She had kept her propane thermostat at fifty-eight degrees because she could no longer afford the firewood she needed. When she saw the oak in our truck, she whispered, “I did not think anyone was coming.” Cole carried every stick onto her porch, stacking it just as his father had taught him. Then he knelt beside her wood stove and built her a fire. Mrs. Hartmann rested her hand on his head. “You stack like your father,” she told him softly. “He stacked crooked in the fourth grade too. I never could break him of it.” She smiled through her tears. “It always held.” That Sunday, we delivered wood to Donna and Marlene, too. Donna offered Cole twenty dollars, but he refused. Marlene had baked a pie every Sunday in October, hoping Jim would come as he always had. We accepted it because that had been Jim’s one rule: he would never take money, but he would never refuse a pie already made. That night, I sat in Jim’s chair with Dale’s receipt on the kitchen table. I wrote a note offering free split oak to any widow or shut-in who needed it before the snow arrived. On Monday morning, I pinned that note to the feed store’s community bulletin board. Right beside it, I pinned Dale’s receipt.

By Wednesday, people were talking. Men offered to lend me their own splitters, and neighbors began calling to ask how they could help. But I didn’t want another machine. I wanted Jim’s back, with his handwriting still on the tank. I had never accused Dale of anything. I hadn’t written a single angry word. I had simply displayed the truth in his own handwriting and let the community decide what it meant. The receipt had said everything I needed it to say. Meanwhile, Cole and I kept splitting wood, carrying on the tradition his father had started. There were still thirteen or fourteen cords waiting along our fence, and winter wasn’t going to wait for anyone. But for the first time since Jim died, our grief had somewhere to go. It went into every round of oak we split, every porch we stacked, and every fire we helped someone light. Dale had wanted forty dollars for an afternoon. What he couldn’t have known was that those forty dollars would help bring an entire community together—and remind a grieving boy that being his father’s son meant carrying forward the good he had left behind.
