I thought the worst thing my neighbor could do was accuse my eleven-year-old son of stealing cardboard from her trash. But when I emptied the garbage bag to prove his innocence, a silver watch slipped from a man’s shirt. Its blue face was unmistakable. I turned it over, and my heart stopped. Engraved on the back were the words I had written five years earlier: “Always your home. S.” It was the anniversary gift I had saved for six months to buy for my husband, Nathan, before he abandoned our family without explanation. I stared at my neighbor, Ivy, who suddenly looked terrified. “Why do you have my husband’s watch?” I asked. I think we need to talk.” The sender introduced herself as Vanessa—Nathan’s second wife and Ivy’s daughter. Her next revelation would explain why my neighbor had spent five years watching my son and me...CONTINUE READING

I thought the worst thing my neighbor could do was accuse my eleven-year-old son of stealing cardboard from her trash.
