On my wedding day, my husband’s ex appeared at our bridal car and said, “Let me ride with you.” My new husband looked at me and replied, “Laurel, just shift over a little so she can fit.” I stepped out of the limousine in my wedding gown and returned to my parents’ house. At that moment, I knew my marriage was over. “Let me ride with you,” Vanessa said, smiling as if she belonged beside my husband. I stared at Ethan Caldwell, waiting for him to explain why his ex-girlfriend needed to join us on our wedding day. Instead, he sighed impatiently. “Her car broke down. It’s only a fifteen-minute ride. Don’t make this difficult.” Vanessa leaned against the open door, her red silk dress contrasting sharply with my white gown. “Seriously, Laurel. Don’t be insecure. Ethan and I have known each other forever.” I searched my husband’s face for even a hint of concern. All I found was irritation. “You’re embarrassing me,” he muttered. “Just move over.” Something inside me suddenly became still. I gathered my expensive wedding dress, stepped out of the limousine, and closed the door. “Where are you going?” Ethan called through the open window. “Home,” I answered. He laughed, convinced I was bluffing. Behind him, Vanessa giggled. “She’ll come back. Girls like her always do.” I kept walking toward my parents’ house, where our beautiful garden ceremony had taken place just hours earlier. Two hundred guests were waiting at the reception, completely unaware that the bride had abandoned her own wedding celebration.

What Ethan didn’t understand was that the elegant reception venue, luxurious limousine, and extravagant honeymoon had all been paid for through my family’s resources. More importantly, he had no idea that I held majority ownership of Whitmore Development, the company where he had recently become chief operating officer. My father had founded the business, but three years earlier, he had transferred controlling ownership to me. Ethan assumed my father still made every important decision. I had never corrected him because I wanted to be loved for myself, not for my money or position. When I entered my parents’ house, my mother rushed toward me, horrified. “Laurel, sweetheart, what happened?” I removed my veil and placed it on the kitchen counter. “Mom, please call our attorney.” My father appeared in the doorway, his expression turning serious as he noticed my bare ring finger. “Tell me what happened.” I explained how Ethan had asked me to surrender my seat to Vanessa on our wedding day, then laughed when I walked away. My father listened without interrupting. When I finished, I looked at the wedding ring in my palm. “He chose her,” I whispered. Then I placed the ring on the table. “Tomorrow, he’ll discover exactly what that choice cost him.” What I didn’t yet know was that the humiliation in the limousine was only the beginning of a betrayal far more devastating than I could have imagined…CONTINUE READING

On my wedding day, my husband’s ex appeared at our bridal car and said, “Let me ride with you.” My new husband looked at me and replied,…

[1

post-1831","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","hentry","category-uncategorized
