On Mother’s Day, I dined alone at an Italian restaurant. Just after paying, I ran into my son and his wife’s family. Then I overheard him giving my membership number to the manager. What I did next left every one of them pale.

My son was attempting to steal from me on Mother’s Day, foolish enough to do it while I stood only six feet away. He had no idea that the membership number he was reciting belonged to the woman who controlled the entire restaurant. My name is Margaret Whitmore. I’m sixty-eight, widowed, and apparently an embarrassment to the son I spent thirty-five years raising. That Sunday, I ate alone at Bellavita, an upscale Italian restaurant in downtown Boston. Families laughed around me, champagne glasses clinked, and mothers received bouquets. My son, Adam, hadn’t even called. Three weeks earlier, I had invited him and his wife, Vanessa, to dinner. Instead, Vanessa had answered his phone and told me they were celebrating with her parents because it was a family occasion. When I asked whether I wasn’t family, she laughed and told me not to be dramatic. So I wore my favorite navy suit, fastened my late husband’s pearl brooch to my lapel, and treated myself to a lovely meal. After paying my $86 bill, I was preparing to leave when I spotted Adam, Vanessa, her parents, and six other relatives near the entrance. Adam’s smile disappeared when he saw me. “Mom? What are you doing here?” he asked. “Having dinner, sweetheart.” Vanessa glanced at my empty table. “Alone? How depressing.” I swallowed my embarrassment and headed toward the door.

Then I heard Adam speaking to the restaurant manager. “The membership number is 000147. Margaret Whitmore. Just charge everything to her account.” I stopped immediately. The manager, Sofia, hesitated. “Sir, this is a Founder’s Reserve account. Third-party charges require authorization.” Adam pulled a folded document from his jacket. “I’m her son. I have authorization.” Vanessa chuckled, claiming I was becoming forgetful, while her father, Graham, explained that they were planning a private reception costing thirty-eight thousand dollars. They intended to put the entire bill on my account. But the amount wasn’t what shocked me. It was the signature on the document. My signature, copied perfectly and entirely forged. I walked back to the hostess stand and asked Sofia to show me the authorization. Adam rolled his eyes. “Mom, don’t make a scene.” I smiled gently. “Oh, sweetheart. I haven’t even started.” He believed I was a lonely widow with money he could access whenever he pleased. He had forgotten something important about the woman standing in front of him. And when I asked the manager to contact the company’s managing director, I watched the confidence drain from his face..CONTINUE READING

On Mother’s Day, I dined alone at an Italian restaurant.
