For thirty-two years, Annie had been the person her husband, Conor, turned to whenever he was sick, hurt, or afraid. He was a strong man with a soft heart, the kind of husband who needed soup, sympathy, and his wife\u2019s hand on his shoulder whenever life became uncomfortable. So when he came home one September afternoon with a supposedly broken ankle, Annie expected the usual complaints and six weeks of taking care of him.
