Sophie lay frighteningly still, and Claire immediately feared the worst. Jamie raised one hand and begged us not to move her carelessly. Then he began talking himself through a series of steps he had apparently practiced many times. Moments later, Sophie coughed and began crying. I had never been so relieved to hear a sound. When the paramedics arrived, Jamie opened his clenched fist and revealed a tiny wooden bead. A decorative clip attached to the crib had broken, and Sophie had begun choking on one of its beads. At the hospital, the doctor confirmed that Jamie had acted quickly and appropriately. When I asked where he had learned what to do, he finally explained the secret behind the doll. He had been attending infant first-aid and CPR classes, practicing on the doll because he wanted to prove he could help keep Sophie safe. His voice broke as he admitted, “I thought maybe then Claire would let me hold her.”

Claire’s face crumpled as she realized how deeply her words had hurt him. She had judged Jamie by an accident from years earlier, never imagining that he had quietly spent weeks learning how to protect the child he adored. She sat beside him and apologized, but Jamie asked only one question: “Is Sophie okay?” When the nurse brought their daughter to us, Claire gently placed the baby in Jamie’s arms. He held her carefully, looking down at her with a tenderness that brought tears to my eyes. Then he paused at the doorway and knocked twice, our old family ritual meaning, “Are we okay?” Claire smiled through her tears and knocked twice in return. I took out my phone and captured the moment: my wife, my brother, and my daughter together at last. For years, I had answered Jamie’s knocks to reassure him that he belonged. That night, I understood something beautiful: sometimes, the person everyone worries about is the one who shows the family what love, patience, and courage truly look like.
