As the weeks passed, Jamie continued visiting us, but he kept his distance from Sophie. He never reached for her, never asked to feed her, and never complained when Claire insisted he wash his hands again. Meanwhile, he began disappearing after work twice a week, explaining only that he had a class to attend. Claire grew increasingly suspicious, convinced that his secretive behavior proved he could not be trusted around our daughter. Then, one stormy Saturday night, Jamie stayed in our guest room because the weather made traveling home unsafe. At 2:13 a.m., a piercing scream came through the baby monitor. Claire and I raced down the hallway and found Sophie lying on the nursery rug while Jamie knelt beside her, his hands trembling. Claire immediately feared the worst, but Jamie urgently told us to call emergency services. He had recognized that Sophie was choking and was carefully following the first-aid steps he had learned. Moments later, Sophie coughed, drew a breath, and began crying. When the paramedics arrived, they discovered that a tiny wooden bead had become lodged in her mouth. Jamie had acted quickly, following the training he had been quietly practicing for weeks.<\/p>\n
At the hospital, the truth finally came out. Jamie had been attending infant first-aid classes twice a week, and the doll in his bag was a training doll he used to practice. He had wanted to learn how to keep Sophie safe because he remembered Claire saying she feared he might hurt her. His greatest hope was that, one day, she would trust him enough to let him hold his niece. Claire sat beside him, tears filling her eyes as she realized how deeply her words had affected him. Jamie hadn’t been hiding something dangerous. He had been preparing himself to become the uncle he wanted to be. When we finally returned to see Sophie, Jamie paused at the doorway and knocked twice. This time, Claire gently knocked back. Then she placed Sophie carefully in his arms. Jamie looked down at the baby, overwhelmed with emotion, and quietly asked if he was holding her correctly. Claire smiled through her tears and told him he was doing just fine. I lifted my phone to capture the moment, expecting Jamie to look toward me for reassurance. Instead, he smiled at Sophie, and Claire leaned closer to them both. For the first time, nobody was left standing outside the family picture. <\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
