The little girl was holding my sleeve so tightly that her tiny fingers had turned white. She was five years old, wearing a faded pink sweater and carrying an old teddy bear beneath one arm. Her twin brother stood beside her, quiet and pale, watching the airport crowd with the serious eyes of a child who had already learned that adults could disappear. I had never seen them before, yet the moment the girl looked up at me, she whispered my name. “Colonel Adrian Steel?” I froze. “How do you know my name?” She glanced at her brother, then looked down at the teddy bear. “Daddy showed us your picture.” Before I could ask another question, a woman in a beige coat hurried toward us. “Lily. Owen. Come here.” The girl immediately stepped closer to me instead. The woman forced a smile. “They’re frightened. They don’t understand what’s happening.” Something in her voice made me uneasy. I looked at the children. “Where is your father?” The boy lowered his eyes. “Daddy is gone.” “Gone where?” Lily whispered, “He died.” The woman quickly interrupted.

“They’ve been through enough. I need to take them home.” At that moment, Major Marco Hayes stepped between us. “Ma’am, airport security asked you to remain here.” Her expression hardened. “My flight is leaving.” Marco didn’t move. “Your flight is no longer your biggest concern.” The terminal slowly fell quiet. Airport officers approached her suitcase, and I noticed something strange. The children had no luggage. No boarding passes. No guardian listed anywhere. My hands went cold when I recognized the handwriting. Daniel Carter. A soldier I had served beside years ago. A man who had once saved my life. A man who, according to the woman standing across from me, had been dead for six weeks. I opened the folder. The first page contained only one sentence: Adrian, if you are reading this, do not trust my wife. I slowly raised my eyes toward the woman in beige. Her face had lost all its color. Then Lily whispered, “Daddy said you would come.” “Why?” I asked. She swallowed hard. “Because he said you were the only person who could save us.” My phone suddenly began to ring. I looked at the screen. The caller ID showed a number I had saved twenty years ago. Daniel Carter. But Daniel Carter was dead….
