The answer came from an unexpected place. When I returned home, I remembered an old locked drawer in my late father’s desk. I had not opened it in decades. Inside, I found envelopes with Australian, German, and Portuguese stamps. Some were letters from my friends. Others were letters I had written to them. My father had kept them all. I suddenly remembered how, as a young man, I used to wait for letters that never came. I had believed my friends had moved on without me. They had believed I had chosen to leave them behind. The truth was heartbreaking: we had all been separated by a misunderstanding that lasted more than half a century. My father had wanted me to remain home and help with the family business. Instead of telling me how he felt, he had quietly kept the letters from reaching me. By the time I understood what had happened, decades had passed. Tommy and Ray were already gone. There was no way to recover those lost years. But Nick was still alive, and I knew I could not lose another moment.

Weeks later, I traveled to Portugal to see him. When I walked into the room, we stared at each other for several seconds. Then Nick smiled and said, “You took your time.” We laughed, and then we hugged like the seventeen-year-old boys we had once been. We talked for hours about Tommy, Ray, our families, and the life we had all lived apart. I showed him one of the letters I had written as a teenager. At the bottom, I had written, “Don’t forget about me over there.” Nick read it quietly before looking at me and saying, “Harold, we never did.” Those words meant more to me than he could ever know. Later, we arranged one final gathering with Tommy’s son and Ray’s daughter. They brought the fishing lure and compass. I brought the wooden fish I had kept since I was sixteen. Nick brought the old pocketknife we had used to carve our initials into the bench. Four objects. Four boys. One promise. We could never recover the years we had lost, but we finally understood that the friendship had never truly disappeared. Sometimes life separates people without ending the love between them. And sometimes, after many years, one forgotten promise is enough to bring them home.
