My name is Harold, and fifty-five years ago, my three best friends and I made a promise beside a small lake outside our town. We were seventeen, full of plans and certain that nothing could ever separate us. Tommy was moving to Australia, Ray dreamed of traveling through Europe, Nick talked about settling somewhere far away, and I planned to stay close to home. On the night of our high school graduation, we sat on our old wooden bench and promised that exactly fifty-five years later, we would return to that same spot. Life, however, had other plans. Tommy moved to Australia, Ray eventually settled in Germany, and Nick made a new life in Portugal. I stayed behind, married, raised two children, became a grandfather, and eventually lost my wife. The letters between us slowly became less frequent until they stopped altogether. Still, I never forgot our promise. Yesterday, I finally drove back to the lake. My hands trembled as I walked toward the old bench, wondering if anyone else would remember. I expected an empty seat and perhaps a few old memories. Instead, I saw three large boxes sitting there. Each one had my name written across the top. I stood frozen for a moment before noticing the four initials we had carved into the wood decades earlier: H. T. R. N. My heart began beating faster. Then he mentioned something that left me confused. He said he had often wondered why I stopped answering his letters. I opened the second box. Inside was Ray’s old silver compass, followed by a bundle of letters dating back to 1971. They were letters I had never seen. One simply said, “We miss you, idiot.” I sat quietly, tears filling my eyes. For more than fifty years, I had believed my friends had forgotten me. But their letters suggested something very different. Then, at the bottom of the third box, I found a collection of photographs and one final note. It explained that Tommy and Ray could no longer come themselves. Nick was still alive, but he had asked someone else to deliver his box. As I read the note, one question kept returning to my mind: If they had never forgotten me, why had none of their letters ever reached me? … CONTINUE READING

My name is Harold, and fifty-five years ago, my three best friends and I made a promise beside a small lake outside our town.
