The answer was waiting inside an old cardboard box in Walter’s house. He showed me photographs, documents, and letters written by my biological mother, Kate. She had given me up because she believed adoption would provide the stable home she couldn’t give me herself. Walter and his wife had wanted to help, but they believed I had grown up with a loving family. They didn’t know I had entered foster care. Kate eventually tried to find me, and after she died, Walter and his wife continued searching. But the adoption had been closed, and they had no reliable information about where I was or what name I had been given. Kate died nine years earlier, leaving behind letters she had written to the daughter she hoped was safe. Reading them was painful. She wondered what my bedroom looked like, what books I liked, and whether someone was waiting for me when I came home. Those words couldn’t give me back the childhood I had lost, but they changed something inside me. For the first time, I understood that I had not necessarily been forgotten. I had been lost.

I didn’t forgive Walter immediately. He admitted that after finding me, he should have told me the truth. Instead, he became frightened that revealing everything would destroy the relationship he had built with us. “Finding you late wasn’t my choice,” he told me. “Not telling you once I did was.” That honesty mattered. Eventually, I told him I was still angry—but also grateful that he had found me. We told the children, and they were delighted to discover that the man they had already called Grandpa really was family. The adoption papers eventually became less important than the bond we had already created. Walter remained at our table, helping with homework and arguing with the children over the last dinner roll. One evening, I placed a plate in front of him and said, “Sit down, Grandpa. Dinner’s getting cold.” He smiled through tears and took his usual seat. My childhood could never be rewritten, and the years of unanswered questions would always be part of my story. But now I knew something I had spent a lifetime needing to hear: I had not been forgotten. Somewhere, someone had been looking for me.
