My mother was waiting in my driveway with a moving truck the night I brought my newborn daughter home. I was exhausted, sore from an emergency C-section, and barely able to stand. My husband, Evan, was carrying our baby inside when Mom smiled and said, “Perfect timing. We’re moving in tonight.” Behind her were my stepfather, my half-sister, her boyfriend, and their children. Boxes were already stacked beside my garage. “No,” I said quietly. Mom laughed. “Don’t be dramatic. You have four bedrooms, and family helps family.” Then she pointed toward the upstairs rooms. “Brittany and the boys will take those two. Then Brittany made the mistake of saying, “Mom already changed our address to here.” I looked at my mother. “What did you do?” She reached into her purse and pulled out a folder. Inside was a document claiming I had agreed to let them live in my house. At the bottom was a signature that looked like mine—but wasn’t. My heart started pounding. I photographed it and sent it to my attorney. Mom leaned closer and whispered, “You should have just let us move in.” Then the police arrived. One officer picked up the document, studied the signature, and asked my mother one simple question: “Where did you get this?” … CONTINUE READING

My mother was waiting in my driveway with a moving truck the night I brought my newborn daughter home.
