My replacement wasn’t upset when I explained what I had discovered. In fact, she was surprisingly kind about it. As I walked her through the position, she kept asking questions about client escalations, vendor problems, departmental coordination, and all the little emergencies I had always handled without being asked. Each time, I showed her the second stack. Those responsibilities weren’t actually written into my role. I had simply absorbed them over the years because I cared about the work and didn’t want anyone else to struggle. She finally looked at me and said, “I honestly didn’t realize this job included all of that.” I smiled and told her that was exactly what I had realized too. I trained her carefully on everything that truly belonged to the position. But when she asked about the extra responsibilities, I directed her to management. My boss was left with the responsibilities that had once followed me home, stayed late with me, and filled the gaps no one had noticed. Two weeks later, I accepted another position with better pay. But this time, I approached the offer differently. I asked questions. I negotiated. I understood what I brought to the table. The experience taught me something I wish I had learned years earlier: being dependable is wonderful, but constantly giving more than you’re paid for doesn’t automatically make people recognize your worth. Sometimes, you have to recognize it first.
