The call eventually led me to a hospital, where I stood outside Jeffrey’s room with my hand resting against the door. I was suddenly afraid of what I might feel. Forty-one years had passed since we were young enough to make promises without understanding their weight. His goodbye letter had taught me not to hope, and now I was standing only a few steps away from the person who had once been my closest friend. I didn’t know whether he wanted forgiveness, friendship, or simply one final conversation. I only knew that I could not walk away without hearing what he had to say.

Then I heard my name.

His voice was older, weaker, but unmistakably his. In that instant, memories I had carefully buried came rushing back. The old promise, the laughter, the goodbye letter, and all the years between them. I knew one conversation could not erase four decades of silence or undo the hurt I had carried. But it could give us something we had never had before: the chance to speak honestly. I opened the door. Jeffrey looked at me, and for the first time in forty-one years, neither of us had to wonder what the other would say. Sometimes life doesn’t return people to us to recreate the past. Sometimes it gives us one final opportunity to understand it.
