The calls began almost immediately. Daniel complained that his card had been declined. Madison demanded that I fix her payment problems. Nobody asked whether I was okay. Then my granddaughter Lily called. She was the only one who asked if I was safe. Later, Daniel and Madison came to my house, angry about the bills. I told them I was no longer responsible for automatically funding their household. I also asked Daniel about the investment inquiry. He said he had only been “exploring options.” But my lawyer later confirmed that Daniel had also asked about power of attorney. I realized I needed to protect more than my bank account.

I changed my estate plans and placed my granddaughter Lily’s inheritance into a protected trust. I also secured my home and made it clear that no one would make decisions about my property while I was still capable of making them myself. When Lily later told me she had heard her father discussing selling my house, I knew I had made the right decision. Daniel eventually returned alone and admitted that he had become too dependent on my help. He apologized and said he wanted to learn how to be my son again. I told him I was willing to see what he did next, but trust would have to be rebuilt slowly. That night, I understood something important: helping your children is an act of love, but protecting yourself is not selfish. Sometimes setting a boundary is the first step toward having a healthier relationship.
