I eventually reached an orchard in Washington, where an old friend of Ruth’s gave me work. For the first time, people knew me for what I could do—not for the story my family had created about me. I learned grafting, managed trees, earned certifications, and eventually became assistant orchard manager.

Four years passed.

Then my family found me.

A scholarship was being created in memory of the girl they believed had died. My former teacher recognized my name and contacted my father. Soon, my mother called with one request: confirm her version of the story. She wanted me to say that I had left years earlier and that they simply hadn’t known whether I was alive.

I refused.

When I returned to Alabama, I met the woman who had unknowingly mourned me. I showed her my yellow notebook, with all 211 dates documenting the weekends I had been forced to disappear.

On Easter morning, I stood beside the dogwood planted in my memory.

My mother approached and asked, “What are you doing here?”

I looked at her and answered, “Standing where you can see me.”

Later, my father finally introduced me to someone as his daughter.

The memorial stone was eventually removed. The dogwood remained.

I returned to Washington and went back to the orchard. I no longer count the days I disappear. I count the things I grow.

At the bottom of my old yellow notebook, beneath 211 tally marks, I wrote one word:

Green.

For years, my family decided when I should disappear. Now, I decide where I grow.
