The reunion became even more complicated when Sophie revealed she was pregnant. Daniel had originally contacted Richard because he needed his father’s family medical history for the baby. But their conversations quickly became about the past. Richard claimed he had tried to reconnect years earlier, but Amanda had refused. Amanda eventually admitted that this was partly true. She had received letters from Richard after he became sober, but she had kept some of them from Daniel because she believed protecting him from another disappointment was the safest choice.

The truth was painful for everyone. Richard admitted he had made serious mistakes, including driving after drinking when Daniel was only nine. Amanda admitted that, although she had been protecting her son, she had also been protecting herself from the pain of seeing Daniel hope for his father again. Daniel, meanwhile, had hidden the reunion because he feared his mother would make the day about old family wounds. No one was completely innocent, and no one carried the entire blame.

Months later, Daniel and Richard slowly began rebuilding their relationship. When Sophie gave birth to their daughter, Nora, Amanda and Richard found themselves standing together as grandparents. Daniel eventually apologized for excluding his mother, while Amanda acknowledged that keeping the truth from him had also caused harm.
