Inside was a ring Jeffrey had bought for me decades earlier. There were also letters revealing a truth neither of us had known. My father had once asked Jeffrey to step away from me, believing I was too young and too devoted to give up my own future for him. Jeffrey listened. Years later, he married Margaret and built a real life with her, while I believed our story had simply ended. My father eventually regretted interfering, but by then, too much time had passed.

We both realized that the greatest mistake wasn’t that we had chosen different lives. It was that so many people had made decisions for us without ever asking what we wanted for ourselves. At sixty, we finally kept the promise we had made at nineteen: if we were both single, we would stop being idiots and find each other.

Forty-one years after he bought it, Jeffrey placed the ring on my finger. It fit perfectly. We could never recover the years we lost, but we decided not to waste the time we had left mourning them. Sometimes life doesn’t erase the past or give us back what was lost. Sometimes it simply opens a door we thought had been closed forever—and gives us the courage to walk through it a second time.
