Willie remembered seeing Robert near the hospital elevators on the night Claudia died. He said Robert gave an envelope full of money to his sister Claire, who was holding her newborn daughter Ivy. He also remembered Robert holding the baby and became convinced that Claudia was still alive. Melanie confronted Robert and eventually Claire, discovering that Ivy was indeed the baby Willie had seen. The money had been meant to help Claire with rent and groceries, while Robert had held Ivy because hearing a baby cry had overwhelmed him with grief. But there was another truth Robert had hidden.

Robert admitted that after Melanie went into surgery, doctors had allowed him to see and hold Claudia. He had spent about twenty minutes with their daughter, memorizing her tiny features and saying goodbye. When Melanie woke, however, he told her Claudia was already gone and never told her that she could have seen her baby too. He had believed he was protecting Melanie from even more pain. Instead, she realized he had taken away a goodbye that belonged to her as well. He had also kept the hospital’s keepsake card bearing Claudia’s tiny footprints.

The truth did not erase the grief, but it finally gave the family a place to begin. Melanie and Robert agreed to seek grief counseling and, together, explained the truth to Willie. His money jar was no longer needed to bring Claudia home, but he could still love and remember her. Later, Melanie finally opened the nursery door and placed Claudia’s footprint card beside the stuffed rabbit Willie had chosen for his sister. The pain remained, but so did something important: Claudia was real, deeply loved, and no longer hidden behind silence.
