The next day, I brought Mom a scrapbook filled with old family photographs, childhood drawings, and cards she had carefully saved. Near the end, I included a page from an old notebook. Melissa immediately became nervous. Mom then opened a locked drawer in her bedroom, revealing bank statements and handwritten records of money she had given Melissa over the years. When we added everything together, the total came to $137,500. I assumed I had finally discovered how much Melissa had taken from Mom. But Mom calmly explained that she had willingly helped her daughter and had never expected every dollar to be repaid.

Then Mom explained why she had kept the records. She wanted to make sure both daughters would eventually be treated fairly. Melissa had simply received part of what she might someday inherit earlier in life, while Mom planned to account for that when dividing her remaining assets. But the money wasn’t what had truly hurt her. It was Melissa’s comment. “I’m seventy,” Mom said softly. “I still like things. I still want to travel. I still get excited about plans. I still want people to think about me sometimes.” Melissa finally realized that she had mistaken Mom’s generosity for proof that Mom didn’t need anything.

By the end of the conversation, Melissa was crying and apologizing. She looked through the scrapbook and saw all the little memories Mom had saved for decades—cards, drawings, photographs, and simple reminders of her daughters growing up. Then Melissa asked Mom if she still wanted to visit a lake she had loved when she was younger. Mom smiled and said yes. The lesson wasn’t really about the $20 or the $137,500. It was about remembering that parents have dreams, wishes, and feelings too. Turning seventy doesn’t mean needing less love, attention, or reasons to look forward to tomorrow.
