If you’ve ever looked at your boarding pass and noticed the letters “SSSS,” you may have wondered what they mean. The abbreviation stands for Secondary Security Screening Selection and indicates that you have been selected for additional security screening before boarding. The process can include a more detailed inspection of your luggage, additional identity checks, electronic-device screening, and, in some cases, a pat-down. Because passengers are often not informed beforehand, the experience can come as an unexpected surprise at the airport.

The selection is connected to the Transportation Security Administration’s Secure Flight program, which uses passenger information for security screening. Selection can happen for different reasons, and some travelers may be selected as part of a security process without having done anything wrong. Factors sometimes associated with additional screening can include travel patterns, booking details, or information that requires further verification. In some cases, selection may also be random. Having SSSS on your boarding pass does not automatically mean that you are suspected of a crime or wrongdoing.

If you receive the designation, the best approach is to remain calm and allow extra time at the airport. Additional screening can take longer than the normal security process, so arriving early can make the experience less stressful. Keep your identification and travel documents easy to access, organize your belongings before reaching the checkpoint, and follow the instructions provided by security personnel. If your electronic devices or luggage need additional inspection, cooperate with the process and ask questions if you are unsure about what is happening.

Most importantly, seeing SSSS on your boarding pass does not mean your trip is in trouble. It simply means that additional screening is required before you can board. While it may add time and inconvenience to your journey, understanding what the code means can make the experience much less stressful. A little preparation, patience, and extra time can help you get through the process calmly and continue your travels.
